Hi Cicatrix, as I understand it,it's best not to store your plugins in the Program files/Reaper/Plugins location that you have asked about. This folder should remain solely for the plugins that come with Reaper. All non reaper plugins should remain in or go too a seperate folder or folders depending on your choice. I store all of my plugins in Program files/Non Reaper Plugins. I cant see any real need to change the location you have if it suits you. You just need to identify you plugin locations in the preferences/vst section, so that reaper knows the places in which to look. Hope this helps.
Thanks for you're attention, and advice Omarkum. All my plugins are working fine with Reaper so far. They have all been identified in the Preferences/VST section so I'm good to go there. I was just curious if one location was perhaps more optimal than another. I will probably place them somewhat similar as to how you have said your plugins are. I plan on making a full switch to Reaper. I really don't even want to open up Sonar anymore after the short time I've been working with Reaper. I guess you could say I have an urge to get rid of all Cakewalk instances when I'm working with Reaper. It's sort of like Sonar saying to me "I'm stilll heerre, muha ha ha! I know I'm weird. Thanks again!
the problem with moving your *.dll files is that while some programs don't mind you moving them around, others have problems and require you to let the program know you moved them. And if that wasn't bad enough, they have various ways of doing this. It all depends. God help you if you ever try and move Dimension Pro..... What I would do is copy, not move, them to the folder of your choice, and then remove the Cakewalk folder from the VST locations list in Reaper, add the new location in, rescan and see if they work. If they don't, simple put back the Cakewalk folder location in Reaper and you will be right back where you started.
What Steve said. Plus, I personally have a dedicated 1TB HDD for audio work. All my plugins and programs and projects are there. That way, if I ever need to reinstall Windows, or format the system disk, I don't have to do much work to start making music again. Did I mention that I hate progs/plugins that use user folders and/or registry? :D Just my 2c...
I made my own VST folder in the Reaper folder and put all my 3rd party VSTs in there.I've done this so it's easy for me to keep track of them and also for back-ups.Once a week I copy my reaper folder to my spare drive and also to a USB stick along with my Reaper settings. I also have dedicated folders for all my songs/projects and back them up to the drive and also make Consolidated versions using the .ogg format and put them on a USB stick as well. As I use partitions I also have a full working backup of my O/S(WinXP pro) on a bootable Flash drive so can re-install in less than 10 mins. See this thread, HTH :)
