question about takes and files

i don't really use takes as i do pretty freeform recording if i record at all. most of what i do comes from pre-recorded material. when i record something on a track in reaper and then re-record it on the same track, does the second take get its own file or does it append to the first? is there a way to choose this behavior as a preference? thanks, BabaG

If you record several takes in one go, they get stored in the same file. If you then add a new bunch of takes, they get recorded in another file. You can see this by looking at the names of the takes.
