Based partly on Brent's thread here... It seems to me that when rendering midi to audio you only want audio where midi is, otherwise it's a waste of space, and time. Here is an example of what I consider a good result. Every host does this a little differently but the result here (imo) is the correct result. Here it's just selecting midi regions and hitting CTL+B to bounce VSTI to audio... So the FR is to only render audio only where midi is. Of course in Reaper the audio would be put on the same track I guess... but then again, there may be issues there with FX getting doubled up.

I got excited a little too soon about this method. :( Apply FX as new take only works for midi if the instrument's audio is playing through the same track as the midi event.

Yes, this is true, regrettably. Haven't thought about this. If you have for instance a multitimbral VSTi that's routed to different tracks it won't work. I might be possible with a macro 'though. -Data
