I posted this message on the 1st.... anyone out there with a FW1814 who can confirm the functonality of the digital inserts? You don't even have to have an external processor, just patch digital output to digital input. If possible, please test both the ADAT and SPDIF ports. DUC? Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob. I'm fairly new to the 1814 myself, and I have not yet used the spdif as an insert point, however I will give it a shot as soon as possible. I have a live recording scenario for you: I use a yamaha 01v dig mixer, and want to send 8 ch adat direct to the 1814, record on laptop, and monitor/mix the FOH using the 01V via direct hardware monitoring of the 1814. Problem is, I can't seem to get the adat signals back to through the lightpipe to the mixer. Do you have any ideas on this? I'm sure it's a configuration/routing issue, but man is it frustrating. Thanks for any insight.

i've never tried the ADAT or S/PDIF lines for inserts .. but i'll try when i get to my box. i know the analog lines work for this .. it's just that M doesn't do latency compensation so depending on the effect, this can be annoying. i'll try it later today and let you know if i crash and burn ;-) and .. i routinely use an 8 channel pre with an adat link to the 1814. just make sure that on the hardware panel (of the M-Audio driver) that you have the digital input set to ADAT (instead of s/pdif) and you have the digital monitoring set to "unmuted" ... then you should see all 8 inputs from the ADAT after the Analog ones (in the mixer panel). jeff ps: i have learned to use the word clock from the pre-amp and feed it to the FW1814 via a BNC cable. all other attempts (either ADAT clock or using the FW1814 as the master) led to a click-fest when recording. ps: bob's not using a 192 I/O!!! .. what gives? ;-)

Oops, misunderstood the 01v question- using the adat outs doesn't break the signal through the mixer, so why would you want to use your 1814 as monitor? You can assign channels 1-8 as directs and also to the stereo bus. If you want to return channels to anythign though, just set the outputs as adat 1-8. I don't think it will do what you are thinking though- but you can monitor formt he 1814 via headphones and hear the recorded out if that's what you need, or the 01v will give you the direct signal.

If I remember correctly, PT 'requires' that insert-send (output) and insert-return (input) audio ports matchup numerically. The 1814 has a smaller number of output ports. IOW... (assuming you're using S/PDIF as the digital output choice) Output 1/2 = analog out 1/2 Output 3/4 = analog out 3/4 Output 5/6 = S/PDIF out 1/2 **The insert-send in our example Input 1/2 = anlog in 1/2 Input 3/4 = analog in 3/4 Input 5/6 = analog in 5/6 **Where the insert-return needs to lineup - for it to work Input 7/8 = analog in 7/8 Input 9/10 = S/PDIF in 1/2 This... combined with the fact that you have to choose either lightpipe or S/PDIF (limitation of the 1814 - can't use both simultaneously) is pretty frustrating. hi jim, thanks for the info .. i stumbled through this with ADAT .. in this mode, the send i/o #5 corresponds to adat 1, #5 -> 2, etc.. .. even still it doesn't work .. but at least i understand the numbering weirdness now. i think i'll file a problem report and see what they say ... it really should work. jeff
