Minus center (i.e. -4.5) Not that it really matters in practice, especially on an analog console.

well ok, i understand the technical reasons for attenuating a signal or boosting it when either panned r-l or center, but my real frustration is application. Example: when recording and trying to stay at say, -12dbfs peak or -18 whatever, with -4.5 as my setting the signal plays back 3-5 db lower than the meter originally showed. no big deal i can make it up or keep it where it is, it just confused the snot out of me. ( im easily confused) so, i guess its no big whoop, just trying different settings that come close to what "THE PRO'S" use?.......*scratches head*

remember pan law is only for MONO TRACKS....this is why Reaper defaults to '0db' globaly. If you set it globaly to anything else you'll have problems if you don't manually reset anything stereo(aux sends/returns,busses etc)to '0db' MC

I can't figure out why anybody cares about pan law, am I missing something? I pan mono tracks where I want them, and deal with volume with the fader as a separate process. For me personally, I can't imagine panning a stereo track, which is 99% of the time the result of rendering a mono track or group of mono tracks that have already been panned appropriately. This is likely more of an issue for people who are actually recording with stereo mikes (can you imagine? :) )

if you have a default -3db set say, then if you render a stereo track it will come back -3 db down, that's a BIG problem to me,remember your master bus is Stereo track :D MC

because that's why it works like it does :D that's how i can be so sure :D I went through all this in V1.x and that was the answer I got form Justin if I remember. AS things stand I think this is fine as long as you're aware, it just confuses new users though. MC
