Replace the Tone pot with a push-pull that will do a coil split. That's what I'd do. In fact, a friend of mine modified my Washburn electric so that a pull of Tone pot will do exactly that to my humbuckers. We also did a neat thing, if I select the neck pickup, and pull the Volume pot, I get serial instead of parallel wiring of pickups. AND this works with coil split, as well (Brian May tone, right there). Extremely flexible guitar, now! Give it to someone who knows wirings. No fear there, then. This is the best thing I did for my stock Washburn, which was really simple (just neck/middle/bridge switch, no coil tap, no series/parallel). It's a tone monster now.

My preference is for a HH configuration, using good 4 wire humbuckers, with a 5 way switch, wired like this: Position 1/Bridge: bridge humbucking (LP Treble) Position 2 : coil-split outer bridge (Strat Bridge) Position 3 : coil-split outer bridge + outer neck (out-of-phase Strat) Position 4 : coi-split outer neck (Strat Neck) Position 5/Neck : neck humbucking (LP Rhythm) Pretty common, but very, very versatile :) You can go from VH to Gary Moore to Yngwie to Hank Marvin, all at the flick of a switch.

To change the tone of the LP without modifying it, you could try tuning the guitar down (one or more frets) or up (no more than one), or just playing the parts up or down a few frets without re-tuning. Then correct in Reaper with a pitch change. The point of this is to simulate a longer scale and altered pickup positions.
