I've been using it for a couple of years now. I love it. The only user-mappable buttons are Mix, Proj, and Trns (not sure why these aren't already mapped by default..) If you want to get fancy, yhertogh made an updated csurf file in this thread: The latest download is on post #47. This will allow you to program custom actions to the Punch/Prev, User/Next, and Loop/Mark buttons. I'm not sure about other control surfaces.. I know there's the AlphaTrack and the BCF/BCR-2000. I don't think the Behringer one can do touch automation, though.
I use one, but I really don't use any mappable stuff. I just use the fader, transport, mute/rec/solo/channel and undo buttons. Works fine, does the job.
I would recommend the frontier alphatrack. I was one of the people who helped write the plugin for Reaper. It's extremely functional and is available free.
yes, more clever usages for assigning fader to other parameters is what I'm searching around for tonight. I figure there may be some of those cool JS plugins for midi that 'maybe' will allow turning volume into other, though VIA the fader port fader of course.
