DOH, I got myself a nice little '96 440 1.8i just six months ago. Have not had to touch it yet so no manual etc. Its that nice a car tthe Mrs has now stolen it for herself. Got in the other day and noticed the horn has stopped working. When we got the car the horn seemed a bit hit and miss as if the wiires may be loose?? So got in the car last night removed the cover on the steering wheel and looked at all the connectors. It all seems to be ok. Questions. 1. Where the hell is the horn, I have looked everywhere and cant find the thing? 2. There is now a SRS light coming up on the dash! How do I tell if we have airbags fitted and how do I cure the light & whatever problem illuminated said light? 3. Whilst I am here how easy is it to fit a towbar for a trailer? Many thanks. Ells.

I know this isnt the most informative of replys but my old 440 1.8xi was a bugger with the horn so I took the fuse out of the box. The horn would go off as and when it chose too including once whilst following a police car. Most embarassing. The horn as I recall (this is why I never fixed it) is quite hard to get too. Underneath a big plastic panel that I would have had to lift the car to remove. Im quite sure someones going to inform you now that its easy to get too but I could never be bothered

Fitting a towbar is quite straight forward if it is the same as a 460. No horrors when I done mine, I think even the holes are there for fixing and the bumper has a section marked for removing, you'll see it when you remove it.

There is now a SRS light coming up on the dash! How do I tell if we have airbags fitted and how do I cure the light & whatever problem illuminated said light? The srs system proberly thinks the airbag in the steering wheel has gone off although in reality you only removed the centre cover to check the horn conections. Maby you might have accidently knocked some sort of switch or dislodged a wire. I would imagine it's proberly a main dealer job to have it reset. As for the horn it's mounted on a small bracket thats welded to the front of the engine subframe. The horn on my wifes 440 has just packed up recently and will have to be replaced with a new one. A few years back I constantly had to replace the horn on my 480. Eventualy I discovered that the rain was getting into the electronics box via the air intake for the heater, running down the inside of the cable trunking, getting into the box and setting off the car alarm! Tow bar looks an easy job. The one on my 460 looks like it is attached to the car via the bolts that hold the rear bumper on. Probberly explaines why my rear bumper do'nt fit very well!

common fault on 440s with air bags are the earth contact on the steering wheel. Take off air bag 2 x torx bolts behind steering make sure igntion off and clean earth contact on black wire bend out terminal .Check yellow connector on air bag is not adrift also. I have also had horn wiring chaffed through where cable tied to front of subframe, cut ties and check insulation, hope this helps cheers Dave
