Hi guys, Im a semi-noobie, so go easy on me =). So I'm trying to get GK to run with X264, but I can never get the configuration dialog to appear as outlined in the FAQ. Whenever I go to the options tab and click X264 First Pass settings nothing happens. I have the X264 binary, and its in my windows System dir, so I would think that GK could see it. Am I missing a component?? Thanks alooooot =)

Hi, the reason is sort of long and there's lots of politics, so here's the short version: o x264 no longer includes an interface for the older VfW system that GK makes use of. In other words, the GK uses the VfW interface, and x264 does not have a a VfW interface ;). The reasons are long and many and subject to hot dispute, but they basically boil down to the fact that VfW is an older technology that can't properly produce x264 output. You have two options: o say "I don't care, GK & x264 for me!" and download an older version of x264 that includes the vfw interface. Advantages are less work for you, disadvantages are borked output in both compatibility & quality. o upgrade to a newer method of producing x264 videos. This probably means something like MeGUI (or any of the other programs in the MPEG4 Encoder GUIs subforum) for you, but you can always manually control the x264.exe via the commandline.
Okey dokey. Thanks for your replies. Is there any development going on for a compatible GUI for the new X264 CLI? I could possibly help with that whenever my school semester here at Georgia Tech is over. I tried MeGUI, but I didn't really like it too much. I guess I'm just a traditionalist =).
I didn't like it much at first either - it's very "not gordian knot"ish :) I would say give it another whirl - especially if you haven't looked at it recently. It's a really powerful app with a very smooth workflow once you get used to it. Not to tell you what to do or anything :) It just works great for me! ~MiSfit
Personally I only use MeGUI for it's nice x264 GUI, everything else I do by hand :). Shop around the GUI forum and poke in all the corners for older GUIs that fell by the wayside - there's something for everyone in there ;)
There's nothing wrong with using Gordian Knot to make the avs and then just putting that into megui, is there? Also, what container is recommended for x264 ? I know avi is no good, but I'm unsure about mp4 or mkv
No, there's no problem with using GK's script creator - although I'd recommend the megui one instead. Both mp4 and mkv are fully compatible with h264 videos.
