Help, ive just managed to break my 1986/87 pattern locking wheel nut, thanks to my garage overtightening the wheel nuts:angry2:! Its the bit that has the four prongs on the top, looks abit like a round castle turret. Would anybody have a spare kicking about that i could purchase please. Thanks Neil.

If all else fails try contacting the manufacturer or volvo.

Point to note - DO NOT allow your local garage/tyre fitter to use an air wrench to do up the wheel nuts. They very often over tighten them (then use a torque wrench to see if they're tight enough???). I broke a brand new socket, and a cross type wheel brace trying to undo one of these. It can cause damage to the wheel - the taper on the wheel nut tries to stretch the bolt hole in the wheel, could split. They might moan at you, but make sure the wheel nuts are tightened with the torque wrench - i.e. the torque wrench goes round at least half a turn before clicking.

Unbeknown to me a garage had overtightened/cross threaded one of my wheelnuts, and it wasn't until I was having new tyres fitted that I found out the nut was cracked down two sides and hanging on by a thread (a crossed one at that :winl2:. Couldn't prove it by then though. Not only did I need a new nut, but the 'bolt' (can't remember proper name) too, as the new nut wouldn't screw on to the 'bolt' because the thread was knacked. Cost a fair bit to fix - just because some garage mechanic had not used a torque wrench. :( Jeff.

I thought the days of air wrenching nuts up tight were long gone. They tend to air wrench them 'close', then torque them the final bit. Great post T-5ones, thanks. cheers James
