Basically, if two mics pick up out of phase frequencies from an instrument, they are going to cancel each other out. The result when you have two mics that are out of phase is that some frequencies are going yo cancel each others while others are going to add each others, so your frequency reponse is going to be really distorted, and the sound is unnatural. Usually, the best way to check is just to listen: try inverting the phase on one of the mics (most if not all plug-ins in PTLE have a button to invert the phase, the striken O). Usually, one of the setting is going to sound natural and the other not. Choose accordingly.

I would also work with the relative distances. one guy moves the mics around in the studio and another guy listens.

Messages: ----.----------R i want it to be heard traveling from left to right.......again its already recorded to do so, but how to bring it out in a mix without running into phase cancelation? i learned how to get a good thick guitar sound, but now i'm curious as to where to fit in the techno- trance electro riffs in the mix........ thanks, you guys have been a great help! hi ! ok, on a (stereo) "trancy electro riff" sample : where would i pan it in the mix? its already in stereo , and it travels from right to left on its own,.....so where do i put it in the mix? - should i leave it alone as a stereo track and pan it like this? L----------.----

since my guitars are panned hard left and right, i wont be panning the electro riffs hard left and right, but more to where i illustrated in the previous post...... so should the doubled tracks be 2 stereo tracks or as 2 mono tracks?

-Right on Kedron. The delay of a couple milliseconds or more also creates a 'chorusing' effect, up to a certain point where it is then perceived as discrete echo (30 or so ms, I think). With regards to amp/speaker polarity, it can create this condition too...
